The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is known for its luxury accommodations, but the resort has rugged roots. The first chalet on the lake was built in 1890 to host outdoor enthusiasts; nine years later, the chalet hired professional Swiss mountain guides to keep guests safe. Until 1954, expert guides have taught generations of people how to climb safely in the Canadian Rockies. In 1997, the hotel decided to resurrect this tradition and began the Mountain Heritage Program, offering guided adventures through the area for all skill levels. Enjoy a leisurely hike to the historic Tea House or a full-day hike along with one of the area’s many hiking and climbing routes. The program operates in both summer and winter.
